The famous leaks revealing that all Internet traffic is inspected in real time, with Microsoft, Apple, Facebook, skype, Google and others collaborating to give the NSA access to their users' data/information.
What are we users left to do?
The news site Russia Today (10 tricks to dodge NSA spying on the Internet (broken link)) gives some tips on how to improve privacy; in this case I will cover only mobile devices (phones and tablets) running the Android Operating System.
Here are the tips on what to do:
- Replace Android with a version of CyanogenMod.
- RedPhone (broken link): Provides point-to-point call encryption.
- K-9 mail: A replacement for Android's default mail client (gmail). It can be integrated with apg to encrypt/decrypt emails.
- Orbot: A tor proxy that allows anonymous Internet browsing on devices running the Android Operating System.
- APG (broken link): Lets you manage pgp/gpg keys to encrypt or decrypt files and emails. It can be integrated with k-9 mail.
- Gibberbot (broken link): Lets you connect messaging services such as jabber and google talk securely with OTR, so from desktop machines you can use pidgin with OTR for point-to-point encrypted message communication.
- Line: A replacement for whatsapp that handles encrypted traffic.
- TextSecure: Lets you send SMS/MMS encrypted and encrypt those SMS/MMS on the device in case the device is stolen.
- CSipSimple (broken link): Lets you make VoIP calls; it is an alternative to skype.
- PGP SMS Lite (broken link): Provides asymmetric encryption using pgp/gpg keys backed by a public key infrastructure.
- F-Droid: A free alternative to Android's application store.
- Prey Anti Robos: An anti-theft application that lets you track and locate your android phone or tablet or laptop.
In the medium term I will be migrating this blog to wordpress with its own domain and communication over https instead of http, following the example of wikipedia (broken link) and as this article on the Internet mentions.
